Today is one of those days that I never forget because of the way I feel after meeting the students each year from the San Miguel School. Today we our celebrating the spirit of giving! No matter what your spiritual beliefs we all have o ne common desire for our world to be free of war, free of bigotry, and we our thankful for the opportunity Rotary affords us to help others.

ANNOUNCEMENTS, Etc.
President Don welcomed students, teachers and club members. He acknowledged Walter Adamowicz, for his willingness to organize the luncheon for the past 13 years and Bob Murphy who stepped up as chair starting this year. According to Don’s research the first Providence Rotary Christmas was celebrated with an 85 foot (!) tree on Westminster Street and presents for the children of Providence. He expressed how proud club members to be involved with students throughout the year.

Over a dozen club members continued the decades-old Providence Rotary tradition of holiday bellringing for the Salvation Army this week. Noontime shoppers at the Eastside Market were also treated to seasonal music by Walt Adamowicz’s volunteer band.

HAPPY BUCKS
Margaret Kane and Jane Kratsch for what children do to the lyrics of the hymn, Silent Night, like turning “round yon virgin” into “round brown virgin!”

Richard Applebaum and Anthony Hollingshead for Anthony Landi ‘s great job organizing the Providence Bruins event, a benefit for Polio Plus.

A number of San Miguel students offered happy bucks in honor of being welcomed by the club, and for club members who are “always having our backs.”

Maury Ryan for closing on his new home in Governor Francis Farms

President Don for his grandson, Jack, who has attended the Fishing Derby with San Miguel students each year - sorry he couldn’t be at the meeting.

SAN MIGUEL AND OUR CLUB
John Wolf, San Miguel’s executive director, gave a brief overview of the school, an independent middle school (grades 5-8) for boys from challenging circumstances.
The school was founded 24 years ago by Brother Lawrence Goyette and is administered by the De La Salle Christian Brothers.
There are 304 graduates and 100% of graduating eighth-graders go on to high school.
The association between Rotary and the school started because of a soccer game at Wheeler School where the San Miguel team had no cleats, shin guards and “uniforms” were school tee shirts. He acknowledged that the David family reached out to get SM students equipment and  the Providence Rotary provided shirts that could be turned inside out for other sports! Since that time students have enjoyed the Rotary fishing derby, annual luncheon, Club mentors and a new Chess Club.

He introduced Edwin Domenech a fourth-year student who he described as a rising star and real, “San Miguel Man.” Edwin said he won’t forget his mentor, teachers and staff who helped him. He hopes to attend one of these schools: Wheeler, Rocky Hill (mom’s favorite,) St. Ray’s or Classical. He hopes to be either a sports coach or an entrepreneur.

The San Miguel Men & Poetry Club performed a number of poems and the grand finale was a visit from Santa (aka Jim Gilcreast) who danced his way to the stage to distribute San Miguel logo backpacks, assisted by elf Kris David.
