ANNOUNCEMENTS, Etc.

The club is planning a new hands-on service project: decorative painting and some fix-up work at the Kizirian Elementary School in Smith Hill. Volunteers will be needed for design in advance, plus painting, clean-up, etc. on Saturdays. Contact Art Norwalk or Mary Brewster to volunteer.

The Peanut Butter Drive has exceeded its goal. Thanks to Mary Brewster for coordinating and carrying.

Lis Messier announced that the club is offering 100 tickets to a benefit performance of the Stephen Sondheim musical Assassin at Barker Playhouse on May 19. Proceeds will support purchase of materials and other expenses for the Kizirian School paint-up, fix-up project.

Don Saracen reviewed the great lineup of speakers set for coming meetings. Check out the list in the left column of this newsletter or on the club web site.

Geoff Gaunt reminded that tickets for the April 6 Paint-off can be reserved online at www.ProvidenceRotary.org. Join the fun to benefit the foundation.

RI's Biggest Issue: Catching MA in Ed
Rhode Island Lt. Gov. Daniel McKee began his presentation by noting that his father had been one of the founders of the Cumberland Rotary Club.

The main focus of his talk was education, where he said the gap between outcomes in Massachusetts and Rhode Island is the biggest issue facing our state. Though he has been a leader in the growth of mayoral academies (a version of charter schools), McKee says “I am for public schools.”

He urged the business community to get more involved in improving education, possibly by joining the efforts of a new non-profit called GetSmartRI. The organization has a goal – called Moon Shot 2021 – of bringing Rhode Island educational outcomes up to Mass levels. As one tactic in the effort, he supports allowing cross-district enrollment.

Shifting gears to energy costs, McKee urged his audience to check out www.ri.gov/empowerri -- a new web site that shows comparative prices offered by competing electricity suppliers and makes it easier for individual customers to save 20-25% on their bills.
