INSPIRATION – Paul Segal
“Empathy is about standing in someone else’s shoes, feeling with his or her heart, seeing with his or her eyes.” --Daniel Pink
“Empathy is about finding echoes of another person in yourself.” --Mohsin Hamid
“I believe empathy is the most essential quality of civilization.” --Roger Ebert
“Empathy is really the opposite of spiritual meanness. It’s the capacity to understand that … someone else’s pain is as meaningful as your own.” --Barbara Kingsolver

ANNOUNCEMENTS, Etc.
Happy Birthday to PP Paul Segal who celebrated his 80th birthday at the meeting!

Kris David reported on a meeting with the new principal of Kizirian School, David Smith. This year the Rotary Reads program will be focused entirely at the school reaching students from pre-k through the 5th grade. Terri Adelman will share more details on this year’s reading program at a future club meeting.

Preparations are in full swing for the Street Painting Festival. President Don announced that the PSPF will be featured on the Rhode Show on Wednesday, Oct 11th. The show airs at 9 a.m. and Jason LeClair will create a unique drawing during the show featuring the Rhode Show logo.

The PSPF is Club’s major fundraising event and John McGinn is asking members to support the event by purchasing a “square.” Square sponsorship by club members has been a significant income source for the PSPF!

Please go to www.ProvidenceRotary.org as soon as possible and complete a sponsorship commitment form and send it to John. Checks may be given to Rob Black or mailed.

Thanks for considering a gift – it will make a big difference to the success of PSPF and the people we’re able to help through the Foundation grants program.

THE RAPIDLY GROWING PHENOMENON
OF CHINA TODAY

George Burman introduced speaker, Grant F. Rhode, Ph.D., an Adjunct Professor at the Naval War College in Newport.

To understand the People’s Republic of China today, Dr. Rhode stressed the importance of looking at China’s history. China’s way of interacting with the outside world is influenced by a number of factors including the rise and fall Chinese Dynasties with periods of great highs and lows and the formation of the ancient Silk Roads for trade and political involvement with the west. The Century of Humiliation, which began in 1842 and ended in1949 with the formation by the Communist Party of the People’s Republic of China. The loss of Taiwan is still a humiliation to the country’s leaders.

The ruling Communist Party, now in the 5th generation, takes a long view on economic development with an integrated national strategy of a new version of the Silk Road. The One Belt, One Road initiative that builds two new trade corridors - one overland, the other by sea – to connect China with the west. With its vast territory and population China has a middle class of 300-400,000,000 and 20% of the world’s GDP. The Chinese are faced with many challenges to continued economic growth including a rapidly aging population, the influx of farmers into urban areas and environmental concerns.
