INSPIRATION
Maxine Cohen inspired us with a thought from past RI president Glenn Estess, Sr.: “One of the most wonderful things about Rotary is that it allows you to be part of something so much larger than yourself.”
No meeting Monday, Jan. 19 (M L King birthday); we meet Tuesday, Jan. 20 instead.
The 50/50 raffle will be postponed until June so that the appropriate licenses may be obtained;
The Rotary Trade Show will be held 2-Feb-2015, $25 for a half table (see John McGinn);
Ballots for electing officers and directors have been mailed and members should have received them by now;
Barry Fain invited members to attend Providence Monthly’s 10 To Watch Party Wed., Jan. 21, 5:30-8:00 pm, at the Providence G (formerly Gas Co.) building on Weybosset St. Mention Rotary at the door and get in for $25 instead of $35.
Various items, particularly new kids underwear, pencils, erasers, jump ropes and frisbees are needed for the Dominican Republic project -- or funds to purchase them! (see Jenny Miller);
This year’s peanut butter collection drive will begin on 2-Feb-2015 (see Holly Applegate);
Help is needed on the committee planning this year’s paint-off event (see Barbara Harris).

Members & friends enjoyed Rotary fellowship while celebrating Jenny Miller's 40th birthday.
Our speaker, Stephen J. Angell, Esq., President and CEO of the Dexter Credit Union, was introduced by Laura Stiles. He spoke on behalf of the Boys and Girls Clubs, where he is a board member.
Growing up in Olneyville, the local club was very important to him. He used it for basketball and swimming, but back in the day there were no girls. In addition to athletics for boys, local clubs are centers for meals, homework help and education programs. And now there girls, too.
As a child, Mr. Angell thought it was a man’s world. At Classical High School he came to the realization that there were many young women who were a lot smarter than he was. And when he read Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler, he realized that society, both in that day and age and still today, presents women with challenges which men do not face.
One of the missions of the local Boys and Girls Clubs is to help young girls. Mr. Angell now has a daughter, and he wants to be sure that she and young girls like her have every opportunity that he had. He noted that “doors open from the inside”, words which illustrate that men and women who have enjoyed some success in life must give the next generation a hand up.
The Providence area Boys and Girls Clubs have established a Young Women’s Leadership Endowment.

Phil Gossel was happy that Brown students were enjoying year-round outdoor tennis.
Mary Brewster said her roof load calculations were all checking out better than the one at Brown.
Bill Sequino was thrilled not to be running a municipality anymore.
Jim Gilcreast said not a flake of snow dared to fall on the Boston College campus.
Jean Patiky did a lovely watercolor called Snow Day (really).
Anthony Hollingshead was happy to have an extra week of preparation for his debut as presiding officer.
Richard Leone said the city was doing a bang-up job for his business.
Jan Feyler is wondering if it's safe to come home next week.
