INSPIRATION
Barbara Harris read words of Ralph Waldo Emerson: “To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and to endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.”

Nearly two dozen Providence Rotarians, friends and prospective members turned out for Thursday's after-hours meeting at Flatbreads Pizza. General Manager (and club member) Amy Manchester told us how Flatbreads uses community service instead of advertising to attract customers and how the great food keeps 'em coming back. Thanks, Amy. We'll be back!

DG STEVE ALBRIGHT:
MEMBERSHIP IS JOB #1!

In his official visit remarks, District Governor Steve Albright set out a challenge to us and all the clubs of Rhode Island and Southeast Mass: to achieve a net increase of at least two members in Rotary year 2019-20. Since we know members will leave for any number of reasons during the year, that means we need to bring in enough new Rotarians to be +2 by next June 30.

DG Steve’s key recommendations included having an active and diverse membership committee to lead the effort with a plan and strategy, constantly monitoring progress and reinforcing membership as a top priority, forming new kinds of clubs to attract different kinds of members in communities where Rotary already exists, and looking at the structures of our meetings to make sure they’re still relevant.

(Editor’s Note: the Rotary Club of Providence is doing everything on that list.)

“We need to take our existing clubs and turn them into irresistible experiences for our current and future members,” Steve concluded. “We need to ask: What is preventing people from joining our club? Then we need to make our clubs into clubs where people are asking us: Can I join your Rotary Club?”

Thanks for the inspiration, Steve. We’ll do our best.
