TWO PATHS TO LITERACY
The Literacy Committee presented ‘Two Paths to Literacy’ its expanded program of support for teachers and students in the Providence Public School District. Committee chair George Babcock reported that the program has been approved by both the club board and foundation trustees.
The first path, outlined by Art Norwalk, is a continuation of our partnership with Harry Kizirian Elementary School. Plans are to purchase computer-based literacy instruction supports that can be used in both in-person and virtual classrooms.
Connie Donnelly and Mary Cullen announced a new partnership with leaders of literacy instruction at the district level. At their recommendation, we will purchase licenses for 5,600 students in seven middle schools to use MyON Reader, a digital library that will engage students in reading, anytime, anywhere.
Pres. Bryan thanked the Literacy Committee for all their hard work and their vision to create a new working relationship with the Providence School Department. Our club is now charged with raising the roof and creating funding for this project. There are plans in the works to have a Spring, Legends for Literacy Virtual Gala!!
