Inspiration
Bill Applegate did a little research and shared a sample of the many designations for October. Such as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Church Safety & Security Month, Adopt A Shelter Dog Month, Halloween Safety Month and Caffeine Addiction & Recovery Month to name a few. And he added an axiom – “Don’t let emotions get the best of you, since knee jerk actions will cause you to slip up and make the wrong move. And in that vein, remember that people shouldn’t always know what you thinking. So, observe, plan, and prepare for the right moment to act, knowing the element of surprise is one of life’s biggest advantages.”

Our Speaker
Kris David, PDG, PE, End Polio Now
Coordinator USA/Canada
Why has polio returned to the United States?
Rotary has been helping to eradicate polio in the world since the 1980's. Recently, a case of vaccine derived polio was reported in Rockland County, New York, a community north of New York City. Why did this happen? What is the chance that Polio cases will be seen in our own backyard?
Kris is Rotary International End Polio Now Coordinator for parts of Canada and the East Coast of the United States, and she updated us on the challenges that remain in the Global Eradication Initiative. Currently there are only two endemic countries that remain. But now, evidence of polio outbreaks have been showing up in U.S. cities.
This summer we saw the first case of paralytic polio in decades. A wake up call was the case in New York that shows that we need people to continue to be vaccinated in countries where polio has been eradicated for decades as one unvaccinated person who comes down with paralysis from polio can spread it to 99 other unvaccinated people in a mild form.
World Polio Day is October 24th and to support Rotary’s number one humanitarian goal please Donate to the PolioPlus campaign using MY ROTARY as a member not a guest to ensure your donation is included in our clubs total donation to polio. Every dollar is matched 2:1 by the Gates foundation.
