More than 130 members and guests gathered for our inaugural Service Above Self award luncheon to honor two Georges:
George W. Babcock, a longtime member of our club, former foundation trustee and incoming board member, was honored for his growing commitment to advancing literacy in the Providence Public Schools.
George S. Farrell, retired Chief of the Providence Fire Department, was honored for his pivotal role in bringing the Honor Flight program to Rhode Island, allowing hundreds of local World War II and Korea veterans to visit memorials in Washington, DC.
A highlight was the return visit of
Cy Wyche, welcomed by Kathy
and Mike Kelly. An Honor Flight
participant, Cy helped present the
award to Chief Farrell.
Both honorees received Paul Harris Fellowships.
FOUNDATION GRANT AT WORK
The New England Patriots and the Patriots Alumni Club, held their annual Football For You clinic in Providence this past week.
The free half-day, non-contact clinic stressed leadership, teamwork, and commitment to young athletes. Classical, Central and Moses Brown coaches along with high school players volunteered alongside former Patriots. Over 100 kids between the ages of 9 - 14 participated.
The event was supported in part by a grant from our club's charities foundation.
Could your genes help end
Alzheimer’s disease? Let’s find out!
At our July 9 meeting, a team of researchers from Butler Hospital's Memory and Aging Unit will update us on current research aimed at preventing Alzheimer's disease. And they will offer members and guests an opportunity to take a gene test and register for possible future participation in clinical research studies.
The test is a simple cheek swab to determine if you have a particular gene. That information, along with some family medical history, will be entered into the national GeneMatch database. If you are invited to take part in later research, you will be given full information and may accept or decline.
To be eligible you must be 55-75 years old and not be diagnosed with cognitive impairment. If you have family or friends who would like to take part, please invite them to the July 9 meeting.
The GeneMatch effort advances Alzheimer’s research by
helping scientists find enough qualified participants to launch new studies. Learn more at
