Investing in Children of Incarcerated Parents
Nondas Voll introduced Jonny Skye, Executive Director of RISE.RISE is a community based program that addresses the toll incarceration takes on families. One in 28 children has a parent in prison and has a significant risk of repeating the cycle of poverty, crime and addiction.

The RISE model combats this by investing in the child. RISE helps children overcome family circumstances by working with them to develop a vision of success; giving them an opportunity to attend schools beyond their neighborhood; and reestablishing trust.

Their core programs include:
  • RISE Scholars - granting students four year, $4,000 scholarships to attend an independent secondary school of their choice;

  • RISE Mentors - volunteers who commit one year of mentoring ; learning supports provided by RISE staff including service referrals for struggling families and learning plans to support children at school.
Most of the children begin the RISE program between 7-10 years of age. Rise has provided over $4 million dollars of scholarships to secondary schools and students have an 89% graduation rate.

If you’d like to make a personal investment that pays important dividends by volunteering, there are 87 children waiting for RISE mentors. You can contact RISE at 421-2010 or talk to Providence Rotarian Dan Murphy, a RISE board member.
