Herb Altman cited two Latin phrases for today’s inspiration. One was from The Aeneid and translates as “Perhaps at some future date we will look back on these days with delight”. The other is “Nil Carborundum Illegitimi” which translates as “Don’t let the bastards get you down”.

Speaker
Former District Governor Dave Clifton spoke to the Club on the issue of CPR. Dave is a certified CPR Trainer and has conducted numerous training sessions including at Rotary functions and at Massachusetts State Police Academy. On several occasions he has utilized his training to save a life, once at a Rotary Conference in Bermuda.
He instructed members on the details of proper CPR procedure by lecture and demonstration on mannequins of both an adult and a child as different procedures apply depending on age. He also brought an AED machine (Automated External Defibrillator) and demonstrated its use, advising that these machines are on walls of many facilities now and that if readily available they can be more effective when manual CPR doesn’t help.
Dave also spoke on the separate issue of the situation in which someone is choking on food and is losing breathing ability. In this case the solution is to take hold of the person from behind and by compressing the hands against the stomach to force the food out - known as the Heimlich Maneuver. He demonstrated this procedure with the assistance of Anthony Hollingshead portraying the person in distress.
