President Mike recognized Randy Dittmar for his generous donation of time and service on behalf of the Charities Foundation and the Dictionary project.   He also pointed out George Burmans’s outstanding presentation on behalf of the Roger Williams Park project.

Pat Germani gave a membership update. After recognizing the members of the membership committee, Pat outlined the streamlining of the process for proposing new members, including the fact that proposal forms are now on the club website. There will be a new onboarding process which will include an expanded “dance card” of activities and milestones to be reached by new members culminating in a graduation ceremony where the “blue” badge will be presented. Mentors will be assigned to new members and Pres. Mike has graciously volunteered to fill that role for Anthony Landi, who was inducted at today's meeting.  Anthony works for UBS and is happily married to his high school sweetheart. They have 2 kids, Anthony and Francesca.

Pres. Mike and sponsor Barry Fain welcome
newly inducted member Anthony Landi.

Walter Adamowicz announced details on the upcoming Fishing Derby—Meet at the Marriott for an 8:30 departure on 5/14.

Wendy Marcus is getting photos of full bags of trash collected as part of the Earth Day project.

Don Saracen gave a preview of upcoming speakers including comedian Charlie Hall, the Dir. Of the RI Dept. of Health, and a local author who wrote about athletes and how they spend their time once their playing days are over. See the website for the list of future speakers.

At its April meeting, the club's board directed the Finance Committee to explore the feasibility of offering a "pay-as-you-eat" option that would allow all members to pay for lunch as they enter each meeting instead of paying quarterly in advance. This option would cause a significant reduction in the club's income, and the committee is charged with identifying ways to balance the budget if it is adopted. A vote is planned at the May 26 board meeting.
First Works -- Engaging With the Arts
Barry Fain introduced Peter Bramante of First Works who is also Exec. Dir. Of the Arts and Business Council.

Peter explained that First Works is the founding creative partner of the Providence International Arts Festival which was initially held downtown in 2015. The driving purpose of First Works is to build cultural, educational and economic vitality of our community through engagement. They currently have a $1.4 million budget which goes toward a number of initiatives.

One of the most prominent is the Arts Learning Program which provides more than 4,000 students with a connection to the arts by bringing icons such as Wynton Marsalis into the classroom. This provides pathways to opportunity for the kids and helps them believe in themselves. This program has been supported by the Providence Rotary Charities Foundation.

To celebrate local artists and promote Providence as  creative hub, First Works will stage PVDFest downtown June 2-5. PVD Fest is a destination event which brought more than 100,000 people into the city with an economic impact of $2.8 million last year. For 2016 they hope to build on last year’s success.
