FBI TARGETS TERRORISM, CORRUPTION, DRUGS, CYBER CRIME
Bob Murphy, who spent 35 years in the FBI, introduced Elizabeth Rosato, supervisory special agent since 2013 in the FBI’s Providence office, a member of the Joint Terrorism Task Force and also responsible for public corruption and white collar crime. She spent 14 years in the NYC office.
The Providence Office is one of 65 satellite offices in the US. There are 7 agents in this office.
Terrorism is everywhere and they must be vigilant because the homegrown terrorism timeline is compressed. However, the number of Americans joining ISIS is declining.
They get a lot of their information from tips on suspicious behavior from the public. RI has “its share of public corruption.”
The opioid crisis is high in RI and disproportionately high in New England. Doctors are overprescribing.
The cyber program has been focusing on compromises of business emails, especially wire transfers. Millions of dollars have not arrived at their proper destinations. If the FBI gets the info quickly enough, they can get the money back in 36 hours. They work with the CIA and the NSA on cyber crime.
The perception of law enforcement has declined; they and the communities should become closer. “It’s difficult to hate up close.”
