ANNOUNCEMENTS, Etc.

President Mike Kelly inspired us with some words from a wise minister who said you can learn a great deal about what a person truly believes is important by looking at his or her checkbook. Help us to open our hearts and our accounts to people in need, and inspire us to give of our knowledge and creativity to Rotary, our city, our nation and the world.

Randy Dittmar then sang a campaign season ditty. He expressed what many of us must feel: can’t we call the whole thing off and save the millions of dollars the "show" costs to produce.

District Governor Kris David spoke about the recent District Conference which included a session on diversity. Billie Roberts from Cape Cod challenged us to look more like the community we serve, and Tony Mendez gave a powerful presentation which pointed out that despite our differences we are all alike in caring and wanting to make the world a better place.

President Kelly complimented Lisa Hill on a successful coat drive, and the upcoming peanut butter drive being organized by Mary Brewster.

Randy Dittmar reported the election results: Liz Messier as President-elect, Don Saracen as 1st Vice President, John McGinn as 2nd Vice President, Art Norwalk as Secretary, Richard Kaplan as Treasure, Peter Loescher as Assistant Treasurer and Parker Smith as Sergeant-at-Arms. Elected to the Board of Directors were Bill David, Pat Germani, Lisa Hill, Steve Hug and Eric Shorr.
Secrets to Effective Leadership
Don Saracen introduced guest speaker Kemi Sorinmade, a leadership coach who helps people in charge motivate the members of their teams to achieve superior results.

There are lots of ways in which leaders try to mold people into a team, but some are better than others.

Force/coercion does not work, in fact it is probably counter-productive.

Manipulating people is also less than ideal, and using one’s position as “boss” does not work.

We have all heard stories and perhaps experienced situations where a coach loses his or her team, or workers “quit” the boss.

Begging, cajoling, bartering or exchanging favors with people (you do this for me and I’ll do this for you) may win lukewarm support or an endorsement, but it never wins over hearts and minds.

But if you can win someone’s respect, if he or she trusts you, your intentions and your goals, then you are on the right track. People attract people. To be a leader, you must start with respect, and then add your own PASSION to the mix. Passion is a powerful force when it is directed to a VISION of a better tomorrow (where are we going), and a PURPOSE (why it is important to get there).
