INSPIRATION
Randy Dittmar said the unwritten rules of basketball as played by five year olds contain inspiring messages for all. Highlights: when you like an opposing player it is OK to hand them the ball; when not sure what to do just keep dribbling; when in doubt where to throw the ball, throw it where nobody is; when you don't know what to do stop and lay on top of the ball.

QUAKERISM IN RHODE ISLAND
AND AROUND THE WORLD

Elizabeth Cazden, a historian of the Quaker Movement and board member of the Friends World Conference, gave an overview of the Quaker Movement worldwide and in Rhode Island.

The movement began in England in the 1640s led by George Fox . It welcomed people from all backgrounds and was organized on the principles of no sacraments or ordained clergy with any member at a meeting being permitted to preach. Pacifism is an important core concept of Quakerism.

The movement spread throughout the English colonial world and was particularly strong in Rhode Island where it is estimated that in the colonial era half the population were Quakers. Several of the original Quaker meeting houses still exist in Rhode Island. Ms. Cazden is a graduate of Oberlin College and Harvard Law School.
