President Elect Holly Applegate opened the meeting with a moment of silence for the recent passing of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

INSPIRATION
Mary Brewster gave us quotes from Ruth Bader Ginsburg (RBG):
"Someone who used whatever talent she had to do her work to the very best of her ability. And to help repair tears in her society, to make things a little better through the use of whatever ability she has. Reading shaped my dreams, and more reading helped me make my dreams come true."

ANNOUNCEMENTS, Etc.
Our next meeting will be an indoor event on Tuesday, Sept. 29 at the Squantum Club. It will also be available on Zoom. Doors will be opened for fresh air, seating two to four people per table. Members to arrive 11:30 for lunch while the main meeting will be on Zoom at 12:00 noon. Many thanks to Peter Loescher for securing this fabulous location.

PDG Kris inducted new members Scot Jones, Ed Fox and Susan Smith from the Groov Pin Corp. of Smithfield. Scot reflected on the many years his father was a member of the Rumford ME club and also and a Paul Harris Fellow. He looks forward to becoming an active member serving the community.

The Rotary Million Mask Challenge Tour is coming to Providence on Wed., Oct. 7, and members are invited to attend the event at 12:30 pm on the State House plaza. The truck will deliver about 20,000 face masks to the Rotary clubs of Rhode Island for distribution to first responders and essential workers statewide. It’s part of a New England-wide project funded by Connecticut philanthropist and Rotarian Ted Rossi.

DANGEROUS DAYS FOR JOURNALISTS
Wendy introduced our speaker Sarah Matthews who is a staff attorney with Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press which provides free legal services to reporters nationally. She is a 2003 Brown grad, Phi Beta Kappa, and was a member of the Women’s Equestrian team.

The Reporters Committee sues the government to gain access to public records. Or unseal court records. They provide legal guides for journalist of every state.

The past four months have been extremely busy with journalists being attacked as they attempt to cover protest. 2020 has seen 812 press freedom violations, a fivefold increase over 2019. 70% of attacks on reporters are by police. Rubber bullets and projectiles have been used in many cases including one reporter who lost an eye.

The committee offers training for police departments on how journalist work. As journalists are becoming more concerned about their safety, there are also courses on how to protect themselves.
