January 7th Newsletter

Welcome to 2024

Our Next Meeting is January 9th!!

Annonucements

The Providence Rotary Club is bringing back our “Tent Supper project” in 2024.

In February and March, fundraising will be accomplished by group members holding “Tent Suppers” in their homes for 4-8 guests, and the guests donating $50 minimum each for the meal. These will be low key, informal events that are not challenging for the hosts. And tents are no longer involved!

This year we are fundraising to help support a Rotary WASH (water, sanitation, hygiene) Project in Ghana that is spearheaded by Clubs in Virginia and Montreal. More info on the project is attached to this email. This will make a great international project for our Club. The project needs more funding and are looking for other clubs to help make up the difference.

We are looking for Club members who will volunteer to host these meals in their homes. Please let me know what date in February or March would be best for you to host and we can get people to sign up for the available slots. I hope some may be given by newer members to get a chance to be active and meet other Providence Rotarians. In past years, this has been a successful way to build a stronger Club as well.

The immediate first step is to let me know if you can host, and what is your best date to do so. After I have dates, I will assist in getting members to sign up and other logistics.

Thank you for participating!

Mary Brewster

HIGH IMPACT

WASH Project in Ghana (Summary)

We are very pleased to announce that we are undertaking a new water project in Ghana!

Our goal is to provide communities, living in poor neighborhoods, with clean water and sanitation. This project, GG23-52766, consists of the drilling of 54 new boreholes and the construction of 324 microflush toilets in Ghana. In addition, we will provide 244 microcredit loans through village savings and loan groups to support farmers, small businesses, boreholes construction and household toilets aiming to improve the economic strength of their communities. The project funding required is $225,000 and we plan to impact 30,343 lives.

Many Rotary Clubs are joining efforts for the success of this project:
  • The project will be jointly hosted by five Ghanaian Rotary Clubs. The Rotary Club of: Kumasi, Accra Achimota, Dunkwa and Wa, and Obuasi as the lead club with its past President Abdul Mumin Tahir who is the primary contact for this project.
  • The Rotary Club of Salem (Virginia) represented by Walter Hughes, will be the International Club. Walter, the project leader, has implemented over 40 Rotary Global Grants in the past 17 years. His projects have impacted more than 971,000 lives. Should you be interested in helping him reaching one million beneficiaries, Walter could give a virtual presentation to your club!
  • The Rotary Club of Montréal is represented by Jean Gagnon who will do an important part of the fundraising with his team.
  • All communities will provide local leadership, labor, and funding. They will raise over $800 toward each borehole.
This community is receiving the gift of clean water
(from the Obuasi Water project GG21-29944 in Ghana).
