INSPIRATION
Arthur Robbins delivered a reading from the Talmud that he felt was relevant to our Rotary mission. The theme of the text was that knowledge must be accompanied by good deeds to achieve our ethical goals and that good deeds leads to more good deeds as more bad deeds lead to more bad deeds.

ANNOUNCEMENTS, Etc.
The club will not meet during the holiday week of July 2.

At our July 9 meeting, a research team from Butler Hospital will collect gene samples – cheek swab, no pain – from members and guests who would like to be included in a national database for possible invitation to take part in trials of new Alzheimer’s medications. Anyone between 55 and 75 who has not been diagnosed with a memory disorder can take part.

More than a dozen members served dinner to neighborhood kids at the Salim Roger Recreation Center next to Kizirian School in the club’s first alternate time meeting Tuesday. Patricia Ogera was one of those who also helped the kids in a craft project to create some very imaginative butterflies.

Installation Remarks by Pres. Art:
How we can Be The Inspiration

After being officially installed by District Governor Bill Tennant, President Art presented the club’s thanks and some gifts to outgoing President Don Saracen.

In his remarks, Art discussed the meaning of the 2018-19 Rotary theme – Be The Inspiration – quoting from RI President Barry Rassin:

“We need to put more emphasis on our public image, to build our membership and attract the partners that can help us scale up our service. We need to focus on larger projects that have a more lasting impact, taking the time to research and plan work that spans Rotary years and terms of office.”

Art noted three new initiatives planned for the coming year to help advance those goals:
  • A multi-year effort to focus the club’s philanthropy and service on childhood literacy in the Providence public schools. Thanks to George Babcock.
  • Service projects performed during our regular meetings to allow all members to participate. Thanks to Bryan Cook.
  • Holding monthly “cocktail hour” meetings to make our club available to prospective members who cannot make regular Monday lunches.
Through these and other activities, supported by a vigorous membership committee, Art challenged members to eliminate any doubt that we are the largest club in the district.
