Inspiration

Cap Willey read quotes from the American Libertarian P. J. O’Rourke, a political satirist and journalist who passed away in February of this year - “never wear anything that panics the cat;“  “political leaders are expert at saying nothing;”  “If Government was a product, selling it would be illegal;”  “The C student starts a restaurant - the A student writes restaurant reviews;’  “If you think health care is expensive now just wait until it is free.”

Announcements

Kris David advised the “Good Night Lights” event on Friday evening was a success. Providence Rotary Club members joined with members of other Rotary Clubs at the Narragansett Brewery and showed their flashlights at the Hasbro Children’s Hospital where the patients returned the shines.
 
President Steve advised that relief efforts for Hurricane Ian in Florida are being coordinated by the Lakeland Rotary Club of District 6960 through Facebook.
 
Don Saracen advised that sponsorships for The Legends For Literacy Gala now total $66,000 and recent sponsorships have been obtained from United Way, Rhode Island Foundation and Providence Media.  Many of the sponsorships have been obtained through the efforts of Barry Fain.     

Happy Bucks

  • Pete Brock for completing rehabilitation from his knee replacement surgery and for his upcoming bird hunting trip with his dog Jaeger.  
  • Rob Black for his birthday which he shares with favorite actress Susan Sarandon.
  • Kris David for her recent trip to the Harry Kirzirian School with Mary Cullen where they were presented with thank you notes for the supplies donated by our Club.  The notes were circulated among the meeting attendees.
  • Cap Willey for his daughter Rhonda’s 50th birthday.
  • Evan Smith for he and spouse Margaret Rizzuto’s 25th Anniversary.
  • Jim Gilcreast needs a hip replacement and has Parkinson’s Disease, but is still happy to wake up in the morning.   

Speaker

Pete Brock, Co-Chair of the Legends For Literacy Gala on October 25, spoke on the plans for the Gala and called on members handling various aspects for comments.  Pete advised that 12 legends have committed to attend including former New England Patriot players and coaches Malcom Mitchell, Rick Cash, Steve King and Dante Scarnecchia. Also coming are Vinny Paz, Arlene Violet & Mike Stenhouse. 
 
Holly Applegate advised the dinner will be chicken and she displayed a sample of the table floral arrangement.  
 
Liz Messier advised plans for registration and seating were in place.  She requested members who have purchased tickets to advise if all tickets purchased will be used to assist in arranging seating. 
 
Art Norwalk has been handling marketing and he encouraged members to contact friends for possible additional ticket purchases. 
 
Kris David advised that among the major auction items are: a Chef’s Dinner; Family Photo Shoot; time share at resort in Tortuga Bay in Cayman Islands donated by Anthony Landi; Gondola Ride on the rivers in Providence and dinner at Cafe Nuevo donated by Holly and Bill Applegate; and a weekend stay in Manhattan at the apartment of Barry Fain.
