INSPIRATION
Bob Murphy was inspired by reflecting on the topic of today's meeting. For several years our signature fund raising event has been the Street Painting Festival, which recently had not been as productive as in the past. At this point a dramatic new idea was proposed by Pete Brock - a " Legends For Literacy Gala " which has been met with great enthusiasm by club members - a truly inspiring moment for Rotarians.

ANNOUNCEMENTS, Etc.
President Art Norwalk initiated a moment of silence in remembrance for club member Anne Black, wife of member Rob Black, who recently passed away.

Bob Murphy advised that the annual fishing trip for the San Miguel students has been organized and will occur on Saturday June 1,with the bus leaving the Marriott at 8:30 AM and returning about 2:30 PM. Bob will furnish full details at the May 20 meeting and have a short meeting at the end of the club meeting for those interested.

LEGENDS FOR LITERACY GALA
Pete Brock announced details of the gala to be held on the evening of Tuesday, October 1, at the Marriott. Pete is co- chairing the event with Susan Kaplan and the event will include an honoring of Richard Kaplan.

In order to make the event a success, four committees have been organized and all members are urged to participate in one of them. For the remainder of the meeting the committees met and discussed ideas and goals and made reports to the membership.
  • Legends chair Bill David announced a goal of 20 legends from the sports and literacy fields to sit at 20 tables of patrons.
  • Auction and Raffle chair Jim Gilcreast stated a goal of 6 to 8 major items for the live auction and a variety of lesser items for the raffle.
  • Dinner co-chairs Holly Applegate and Liz Messier advised plans were made for VIP greeting, seating arrangements and registration.
  • Marketing and Sponsorship chair Don Saracen spoke of several ideas to obtain sponsors, including using the list of sponsors from the Street Painting Festival; also dividing the committee into separate groups focused on the two responsibilities.
