Speaker

Anthony Hollinhshead introduced our speaker, Don Wright.

Don’s hometown was Suburban Maryland. He graduated from Brown University in 1979 with AB in Psychology. He worked at a private psychiatric hospital in Maryland from 1979 to 1983. He returned to Rhode Island in 1984. He had a sales career at IBM in Providence for 8 years, was a golf professional for 3 years then pursued a sales career in finance at Citizens Bank (Trust Company), Fidelity, State Street. He was Executive Director of Button Hole (pre-opening 2000 thru 2002) He pursued entrepreneurial experience from 2002 to 2014 in Mechanology. He returned to Button Hole as Executive Director in 2015 to the present.

Don talked about the founding of Button Hole by Ed Mauro who had a vision to look at an inner city abandoned gravel pit and envision an instructional gold course in 1997. He created an urban oasis that opens doors and creates opportunities for the community’s youth. As an avid golfer, Mauro believed in the power of the game and its life lessons to help guide young people as they grow into adults and he recognized the particular benefit for inner city youth.

More than 25,000 disadvantaged children live within three miles of the gravel pit that Mauro together with a Board of committed supporters worked tirelessly to turn into the Button Hole Short Course and teaching center. When it opened in 2000, Button Hole’s Mission was simply enriching the lives of young people by providing facilities and programs that develop strong character, teach life values, and champion success through the game of golf. Youngsters who become “Button Hole Kids” use the facility for $1. PGA Tour stars, Brad Faxon, Billy Andrade and Tiger Woods became active supporters. RIGA moved its office to the site.

From Mauro’s vision and drive, Button Hole has become one of the region’s most successful community resources, nationally recognized for its programs and facility exposing over a thousand kids each year to the game of golf and its values.

Things That Are Desired or Things Longed For

Go placidly amid the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender, be on good terms with all persons.

Speak your truth quietly and clearly, and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexatious to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.

Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is: many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment, it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.

Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gently with yourself. You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here.

And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore, be at peace with God, whatever you conceive him to be. And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.
