November 6th Newsletter

Meeting Date:  November 1, 2022

Reporter:  Liz Messier

President Steve Hug called the meeting together at 12:00pm.

He took a moment to share a lovely note with us from a George J. West Elementary teacher, Ms. Maher, who wrote to thank the Rotary for the books given to the children during Malcolm Mitchell’s visit to the school.  She has received her materials and is excited to get started on the new reading  program.

Inspiration

Liz Messier reminded everyone that Tuesday, November 8th is Election Day and encouraged everyone to have their voice heard by getting out to vote.  She shared a quote from Roald Dahl who said, “Somewhere inside of all of us is the power to change the world.”

Guests

Jonathan Kaufman, a prospective new member.
Lois Willey, Cap Willey’s wife.

Announcements

Pete Brock thanked everyone for their participation in this year’s successful gala.  Early projections indicate that we did even better this year than last.  More to come on final dollar figures as there are pledges still outstanding.  A reminder to all Rotarians who pledged to see Rob Black for payment.  Pete mentioned that our efforts for the Gala focus all our energy and resources onto something really important, literacy for Providence, rather than doing smaller projects that can’t make as big an impact.

Bob Murphy is coordinating our Holiday party with San Miguel School.  It will be held on December 6th and all Rotarians are encouraged to attend.  Guests are welcome.

Bob also wanted to let us know that he has arranged next week’s speaker in honor of Veteran’s Day.  Frank Lennon, a West Point Graduate and Green Beret during the Vietnam war, will be speaking.  He Is now President of the Aviation Hall of Fame.  Be sure to join us on November 8th to hear Frank.

Maury Ryan reminded everyone that all are welcome to join the Providence Rotary Book Club that has been in existence for 20 years!  The book club meets the first Monday of every month at 1pm.  Last month the group enjoyed the book entitled, “Sweetness of Water” by Nathan Harris.  This month’s book is The Great Bridge (The building of the Brooklyn Bridge) by the late David McCullough.  Discussion of this book will take place on December 5th at 1 pm.

  • Liz Messier gave 5 happy bucks for everyone that helped on the Registration Team for the Gala.
  • Jim Gilcreast is happy!
  • Bill Applegate is happy as his daughter, Burgundy from England, will be joining he and Holly in NYC as they visit their son Austin and their new grandson.
  • President Hug gave a happy buck for his grandson, Noah, who is four years old and dressed as a pumpkin for Halloween.  He is excited to be visiting his son and grandson in Virginia in the very near future.
  • Barry Fain gave a happy buck to thank everyone for his Gala Award and for the fact that so many of his family members attend the Gala, including his son.  He was proud to share his love for the Rotary with his family.
  • Cap Willey is happy to remind everyone to vote and secondly, to impress on everyone the importance of seeing a dermatologist on a regular basis.  He had a scare last week when a melanoma was found and thankfully removed.
  • Don Saracen gave a happy buck for Pete Brock and thanked and congratulated everyone involved with the Gala.  He is also happy that Barry Fain has such a large family as they helped contribute to the large attendance at the gala!
  • Kris David thanked everyone who worked on the Gala “behind the scenes” and gave a special shout out to Susan Kearney Kaplan for helping to keep everyone on track throughout the process.

Membership Update

AnthonyHollingshead took some time to bring us up to date regarding what the membership committee is working on at present.  The current committee consists of Anthony, Lisa Hill, Karen Mueller, PJ Fox, Michaela Hermann and Clara Decerbo.  Current projects include:
  • A new handout for the public about what the Rotary is and how to join.  Michaela came up with two possible designs which were presented at the meeting.  Let Anthony know which you prefer.
  • Calling absent Rotarians to encourage them to come back to our weekly meetings
  • Following up on all website inquiries regarding membership
  • An improved new member orientation
Anthony shared with us their Each One Bring One campaign encouraging all Rotarians to get involved and take ownership for membership.  This is not solely the job of the committee but belongs to each one of us.  Give some serious thought about who you might introduce to the Rotary.  The committee compiled Rotarian’s thoughts as to why they belong to use as talking points when discussing the Rotary with potential members.  Ask a committee member for a copy of the list.

We have three newly approved members waiting to be inducted.  More info regarding dates of inductions to come.  Congratulations to:
-Johnathan Kaufman (November 8, 2022)
-Sam New (November 8, 2022)
-Ray Hull (November 15, 2022)

Anthony also brought our attention to a free seminar coming up on Saturday, November 12 from 10am-12pm on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. Presented by District 7950, Bruce Rutter, Public Image Chair and member of the Duxbury Rotary Club, is the presenter.  Location is Harvey Assembly Hall 842 Tremont Street in Duxbury, Mass.

Anthony read the Rotary International Diversity Statement which you can read by clicking this link.  https://www.rotary.org/en/about-rotary/diversity-equity-and-inclusion.
