Inspiration
Holly Applegate shared a few inspiring quotes from teachers to their students:
- The key to success is you
- Life will take you to amazing places if you have the courage to try.
- Not every choice is going to be the right one. But, it’s the wrong choices that will teach you the most.
- You are the narrator of your next adventure.
- True heroes work hard to make their dreams a reality.
- Every step you take in life isn’t going to be easy. But it will be worth it.
- The theme of your story is up to you. Make it an epic adventure.
- The story of your life is written one word at a time. Don’t get too ahead of yourself.
- A smile and a positive attitude can take you a lot more places than a frown and an “I can’t”.
- You have the power to change the world, one nice word at a time.
Announcements
This past weekend, Clubs around the country participated in community service projects for the annual Rotary Day of Service. Our club attended the Rotary Club of Cranston’s Touch a Truck event, that was attended by over 500 families. Emily Bernstein, Mary Cullen, Alex David, Anthony Hollingshead, Karen Mueller and Chair, Anxhela Elezaj attended. We were joined by members of the Rotary Clubs from Sharon, MA and Metro Providence.
Anxhela Elejaz organized our group and we are looking forward to her returning from Albania.
Our booth included a ShelterBox tent, membership information and an area for children to make a heart for the homeless that we put into dental hygiene kits. It was a great day!
Monday, May 27th (Memorial Day) from 9:00AM – 11:00AM, several Providence Rotarians will be joining the Rotary Club of East Providence to march in the Memorial Day Parade. We will be handing out packets of wildflower seeds to help save the Monarch butterfly (Operation Pollination). Meet at the former Oldham Elementary school, 60 Bart Ave, Riverside.
Next week is Reading at George J West. Pleas Elementary School. Please contact Art Norwalk for more details.
Please remember to bring in gently used books for our Book Drive – Books are Wings. Please help Jane Berkowitz who volunteered to sort the books at the United Way office on June 8th.

Speaker
Pete Brock introduced our guest speaker – Thor Bjorn, Athletic Director at URI.
Thor played football at UMASS prior to becoming Assistant Athletic Director at UMASS. He became the URI Athletic Director in 2007. The University Of Rhode Island has over 500 student athletes. Thor talked about the challenges of the transfer portal and money college athletes receive through NIL (Name Image and Likeness).
Coaches no longer have the luxury to think long-term, they have to build a “year-to-year” program. Mid-major schools, like URI, do not have the same NIL war-chest as the schools in larger conferences. Thor answered many questions following his speech.
Note: Shortly after Bjorn' talk - the NCAA agreed to a $2.8 Billion settlement.
