PRESERVATION INCLUDES EMBRACING EXCELLENT NEW DESIGN
Providence Preservation Society executive director Brent Runyon explained that PPS got its start on Benefit Street as a reaction to Brown University’s expansion of their campus. The residents of Providence did not want to lose the city’s historic buildings, so they created a plan to remove blight by preserving buildings—not demolishing them—and doing selective infill.

The focus of the organization is to partner with communities and to help Providence think holistically about city planning and design, which includes both embracing excellent new design and also recognizing that preservation is a primary contributor to the vitality and beauty of neighborhoods.

The Endangered Properties Program is one of PPS’ most well-known and successful advocacy / preservation programs. Current properties on the list include the Industrial Trust Building, the Broad Street Synagogue (formerly Temple Beth El), and several Providence Public School Buildings, as represented by Hope High School Auditorium. Nominations are now open for the 2021 Most Endangered Properties list.
