INSPIRATION
As we long for a real spring, Mary Brewster offered an inspiration from The Enkindled Spring by D. H. Lawrence
This spring as it comes bursts up in bonfires green,
Wild puffing of emerald trees, and flame-filled bushes,
Thorn-blossom lifting in wreaths of smoke between
Where the wood fumes up and the watery, flickering rushes.

Trinity Rep: Arts and Community
Tom Parrish, Executive Director of Trinity Repertory Company, reviewed Trinity’s development in Rhode Island and the impact it has on our community and to theater around the country since its founding at the Trinity Church in 1963.
He described the pillars of Trinity: Company, Education and Community Engagement through art with an emphasis on how art builds community. Trinity is one of the last resident theater companies in the country.
Tom gave a brief overview of how theater is made, starting with selection of a balanced season that is appealing to subscription ticket holders. Once the plays are identified, it’s on to design where the physical part of each play is planned and executed including set design, furniture and costumes. Sixty-five full time staff members work in this area. Finally rehearsals start for the actors, music and technical effects.
Trinity has a long history and commitment to education and has developed many partnerships that impact the community:
- Actors work with Bradley Hospital staff developing programs to reach children with autism and other cognitive disorders.
- Trinity partners with Brown University for MFA graduate training programs.
- With less funding for art education, some schools outsource to Trinity for theatre experiences for their students.
- Through a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, 7,000 eleventh grade students will see A Midsummer’s Night Dream through Trinity.
