IMPROVING GOVERNMENT
SERVICES TO BUSINESS
Liz Tanner, Esq., Director of RI Department of Business Regulation, spoke about her department’s work to make it easier for businesses to access the information and technical support they need to be successful. After running several businesses herself and representing business clients, she understands the frustrations of business owners and developed a plan to streamline procedures and create a customer service focus at DBR.

This process started with a series of listening sessions where businesses identified the many ways their needs were not being met. Poor customer service, inability to access what laws and regulations apply and duplication of paperwork were identified.

In conjunction with the offices of the Governor and Secretary of State, initiatives have been implemented focusing on improving coordination (including between the State and municipalities) increased access to information through technology and technical support. Businesses can now access fee schedules and all regulations on the Secretary of State’s website. There are online wizards/guides on how to start a business or build a building. Applications can now be submitted and monitored online.  DBR is making progress and Ms. Tanner encourages people to reach out to her with problems.
