CAPTURING THE STORY OF PROVIDENCE’S
DISPLACED CAPE VERDEAN COMMUNITY
Our speaker this week was Dr. Claire Andrade-Watkins, award winning producer/director and academician. Dr. Andrade-Watkins is a member of the Fox Point Cape Verdean community that once thrived in Providence.

At its height, there were approximately 10,000 people living in this community. As she began her studies of history, Dr. Andrade-Watkins realized that the story of this community which was a vibrant part of Providence was missing. She then made a commitment to find and tell the story of the Cape Verdean community. She created a three-part documentary detailing history of her community.

Ironically, Dr. Andrade-Watkins debuted her initial film at the Cable Car Cinema which was originally the garage of the man who largely promoted the development of the area which ultimately led to the displacement of the Cape Verdean community. This project helped Dr. Andrade-Watkins grieve, bring closure, and say goodbye to the “Pointe” that she knew.
