Mike Kelly, who proudly served as a Marine, reminded us of the incredible sacrifice veterans make so we can enjoy the freedom afforded us in this country. He then led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.
Inspiration
Bill Applegate led us in an inspiration. Rotary is a place where we are not only allowed to help others, but it can also be the source of some comfort and wisdom in our own daily lives. So here are three quotes from people smarter than I, which helped me lead people, and I hope they help you.
-
The Chinese philosopher, Lao Tzu, said: “A leader is best when people barely know he exists. When his work is done, his aim fulfilled, they will say: we did it ourselves.”
-
Then to run an organization Teddy Roosevelt opined that “The best executive is the one who has sense enough to pick good men to do what he wants done, and self-restraint enough to keep from meddling with them while they do it.
-
But you must leave it to Fred Rogers for penning “There are three ways to ultimate success: The first way is to be kind. The second way is to be kind. The third way is to be kind.”

Guest Speaker
Holly Applegate introduced Liz Rollins-Mauran - Mile of History Association (MoHA).
Liz has served for sixteen years on the Board of the Mount Vernon Ladies Association. Currently, she is the Chair of Collections, but served as chair of Preservation for many years. In Rhode Island, her tenure on the Rhode Island Zoological Society Board spanned decades. She is on the advisory boards of the Providence Preservation Society and the Newport Historical Society, and she is the President of the Mile of History Association.
Liz explained how the Association preserves and protects Providence’s most historic area of beautiful Benefit Street. The area gets approximately 300,000 visitors a year and is a tourist attraction for the state.
Areas of Benefit Street that the Association has enhanced include repaving, restored streetlights, repaired sidewalk, and repaired tree wells. Additionally, MoHA is in the process of placing informational signage along the street to enhance the story telling of this street for the “benefit of Providence’s residents.”
A little-known fact, the First Baptist Church of America between Benefit and North Main Street is indeed THE first Baptist church in America.
